Bloomberg.com: Worldwide

Down 15.1% so far today. Who on earth would've bought Ford stock any time in the last several years is beyond me... they lose money every year don't they? Maybe it's time the American auto industry goes the way of the dinosaurs.

I've owned a lot of Mustangs. I always bought them used because they're such a bad investment new (they drop 50% of their value in <2 years) ... so I was Ford's worst customer . I bought a nice 99GT for $7800 a few years ago and sold it a year later for $7800. It never had a problem while I owned it. But that's not really the point here .

The company's in awful shape. The workforce is overpaid and the products are not innovative. The focus has been on huge inefficient vehicles for so long that this was bound to happen. The quality of the product has not really improved for a decade while Japanese cars are still built to much higher standards.

Unfortunately, Fords are all I've been able to afford lol. They are so cheap used that you can get a low mileage car for nothing. I've had two mustangs that didn't have any problems. My first Explorer had the tranny go out and the engine just blew. I just got another Explorer. It's a risk but it's all I can afford at the moment. I'm a big guy and drive a lot with my job so having a larger vehicle is key for me to be comfortable. For $2500 or less that I had after selling my car, there isn't many large japanese vehicles in that price range with low enough miles.

In the future, if I am set financially a lot better, I'd definitely get a 4runner or Pilot instead. Until then, cheap Fords is all I'll be able to get...

I read an article the other day that was stating that Ford plans to basically stop production on SUV's and majorly cut back on trucks to focus on smaller cars. SUV's and trucks have been Fords bread and butter for a long time and they have never been able to build a decent compact.

GM's stocks were recently back to there share price from 1954. I'm not sure where it sits now as its not exactly a stock i'm interested in picking up.

Chryslers all but bankrupt as it stands and just cut 1000 jobs.

I think its very possible that were starting to see the begining of the end of the North american automobile, they just simply arn't competative, and even if the day comes that they can be, there brand image has been dragged through the mud for so long that no one really wants them.

the sad part is that these companies are staples of the North american economy. GM is one of the largest contributers to Canada's GDP. The Gov is going to try and bail them out when things get bad enought, but I don't know that thats the best decision.

Ford should give up everything but the GT. Same old story; you don't remain vigilant when your on top, you'll get your fill of humble pie.

The American auto industry is getting a dose of long overdue medicine. Chrysler can close as far as I'm concerned, and both GM and Ford are going to have to shrink, reform, and compete. All those union "Buy American!" bumper stickers aren't going to save them this time.

IT'S ABOUT FUCKING TIME

Look how many cool little cars we missed in the US over the years in favor of stupid Excursions and Expeditions. You'd think someone would've seen this coming ... I don't know, like 10 years ago?
