Ok, quick question:

Suppose my employer gives me a copy of Office that doesn't ask for a cd key and instructs me to install it on a client's computers. Could I get in trouble? Or would my employer/company get in trouble?

I think it would be your employer's fault for giving a copy of office to a client.

Seems to me it would be on the employer as well, but if you know its wrong and you do it anyway...

Scott, you know I respect your opinion, but its either "do as the employer says" or not have food on the table.

PM sent.

BSA only cares about who owns the PC in question. I'm doing a software audit right now, and there is a bunch of shit on their machines from their old sys admin that is pirated/illegal. Too fucking bad. BSA will fine you out the ass regardless (even if you show up clean, you still have to conduct audits for I believe 2 years.)

Ethically, if you know its wrong...

So you're saying the liability falls on the owner of the machines with the software installed?

Ethically I think you're liable, but I don't know what the law says about it. I'm a hard ass about licensing at work most of the time. But for friends of mine I'll sometimes make exceptions.

Yup, the owner gets the bone up the arse. it's like getting a ticket while you're driving a company rig. The cop doesn't care who's car it is, only who the driver is.

Until now, never!before in Earth history, has mass extinction involved a choice.

Is it ethical to charge over $4.00 a gallon for gas? Just install it and forget about it.

Hmmm....

This scenerio sounds strangely famaliar... but I won't admit to anything

I would think both would be in trouble with the higher ups... ONE because your boss told you to do it and TWO because you did it and did not tell someone above your boss what was going on.

"Guaranteed to jack you up!"

If there are higher-ups in the company, talk with them about it. Tell them that you don't feel comfortable doing this because it is illegal. If they tell you that you don't have a choice, then do what your gut tells you. If you can live with pirating software, then do it. If you can't, then quit.

If you quit, snitch on them. They're putting you in a situation that's really fucked up, so make sure you get them in hot water for treating you like a slave, instead of an employee.
