today my psychology teacher was talking to us about death and how the mind prepares the body to die. then we did the usual if some wacko scientist invented a deathclock (futurama?) that could tell you how much time you had left before you got relocated. and as usual gives us an assignment on the subject. a professor at some school put a poll up 97% of all the peopple surveyed said they wouldnt want to know when they are gonna die 2% said they would want to know and 1% was un decided. and my teacher wants the class to conduct its own poll on this subject, for this to be valid to turn into my teach it must be anonymous

I suppose most people wouldn't want to know because it would just cause them to worry about it and not enjoy life.

No way in hell! I don't even keep a clock where I sleep because if I woke up in the nigh and saw what time it was I would obsess about it. This is why I fear cancer - because you have advanced warning of your death. A heart attack or many other natural cause of death would be preferable.

Yet at the same time knowing you only had x amount of time to live would change the "eh, maybe tomorrow or someday" answers quite a bit.

I wouldn't mind knowing. And it'd be pretty irrelevant in the end if you got run over by a car 30 years early or something

Not if you knew the exact day you were going to hit the bucket, just not knowing how

If such a thing were invented, people would absolutely say no at first. But they would slowly give in and find out.

Well obviously, but the "death clock" idea generally assumes you live a full natural lifespan, since there's no way to predict accidents etc

I think a lot of people would be scared to know when, and live in fear of that day coming..

.. but on the other hand, it could be very relieving to know that what choices and risks you take aren't going to be the ones that kill you. You can really live life and be prepared to face the end of your cycle.

wiskas please don't talk like that man

All I see is a black hole, and sooner or later they’re going to suck each one of us into it. But when they come for me, I'm going to take as many of them with me as I can.

I can see both points but it wouldn't be bad to know because then you could liquidate your assets early, make out your will, move to Fla and live in the warmth with the Jews

Perfect. Fuck. Ok stay here and get... butt fucked by 12 Neanderthals. Bitch

wait, so is it a case of the deathclock predicting when you would die of natural causes? Or the impossible scenario of predicting when you were going to die by accident as well?

if it were only for natural causes, then I would want to know. But if it were for any cause of death, then I'd rather not. it might be a lot earlier than I would like.

the assignment is a crazy scientist has invented a device that will tell you when you will die within a few seconds (futurama anyone?) and this is how fate has planned you to die, lets say joe schmoe uses the death clock and it says he has 12 years 6 months 22 days 7 hours 52 minutes to live, that means that how ever he will die he will die in 12 years 6 months 22 days 7 hours and 52 minutes, ask your survey group if they would like to know when they die, if they dont want to know or if they arent sure. the purpouse of this assignment is to see how people from diffrent backgrounds relate to the common goal of humanity
