I'm going to buy a new cell phone and I hear the theory is that all you need to do is buy an unlocked cell phone and then which the sim card from your current working phone to the unlocked one and it should work perfectly fine.
Is this correct? (I have cingular service)

"It is good that war is terrible, otherwise we would become over fond of it." - Robert E. Lee.

"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."

Awesome thanks...

So then I assume they have devised a universal sim card design?

Yes all sim cards are the same size.

Physical size maybe but not necessarily the same. Some older phones have issues with newer sim cards.

What does unlocking a phone allow you to do?

It allows you to use your phone on another carrier that uses the same technology. Usually it's gsm people are referring to when they are talking about unlocking.

T-mo and cingular are the two nationwide gsm carriers, canada and europe also use gsm.

Basically if your phone is locked, then when you try to put another carriers sim card in it it wont work and allow you on to the network. A sim card is what holds your phone number and where network information is store (such as what networks to prefer and in what order).

Verizon and sprint use cdma as does asia. Cdma does not require a sim card.

Yeah I saw that the new Porsche Boxter has a sim card slot so you can use it as a phone. Hah! And I'm not joking.

The one with the new Boxter. He says you put the sim chip in and it turns into an oversized phone.
