OK, so I know almost nothing about TVs, cable, satellite, etc. I'm a computer buff, but am pretty oblivious to this stuff (and cars as well). A friend of mine just told me that as long as I have a cable modem in the house, I should also be able to pick up basic cable for free just by plugging in the house. Is this true?!?! That'd be sweet.

With AT&T this was true, but once Comcast took over they filtered everything but local and the weather channel. It's worth a try.

Just remember, if you have to split the line the modem is using, use a good non-amplified splitter(amplified = plug into the wall). If you don't your internets will die.

it really depends, usually if they come install your cable line just for internet they'll put local filters on your cable line (which you can take off if you can find them) but if you're lucky and in most cases this is true, your cable guy is the laziest fucker on the planet and didn't put them in anyway. Give it a shot.

2 words, cable descrambler

All I see is a black hole, and sooner or later they’re going to suck each one of us into it. But when they come for me, I'm going to take as many of them with me as I can.

I split my connection for my cable modem (Time Warner Road Runner) so that I get internet and my tv tuner - it gets basic cable although I'm hesitant to cancel cable altogether because I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep picking up basic on my tv tuner.

Perfect. Fuck. Ok stay here and get... butt fucked by 12 Neanderthals. Bitch

I don't think it works. I turned off the cable modem, and used that cable to hook up my TV (so the internet wasn't running). All I got was scrambled junk. Oh well. Plugged the cable back in the modem and so at least I have internet.

People have been telling me to "split" the cable modem and TV, but like, wtf does that mean. I used a different jack in the wall to try to get the TV.

I thought that's what it was, but shouldn't it just work if they are using 2 different cable plugs from the wall?? This apartment has liek 7 cable outlets. (2 bedroom, 1 kitchen, 1 dining room, 1 computer room, 2 living room). Why would I need to feed off the same outlet in the wall?? I'm not trying to be a dick, I just don't get it.

You wouldnt need to, use another jack, unless you want the tv in the same room with the computer. If your getting scrambled junk, get a descrambler and get every channell for free (even the dirty ones )

You probably have to do a channel search on your tv before you can get anything, even if it's legit.
Could you describe the "scrambled junk"? If it's just straight-up-and-down static, then do the channel search, but if it looks like there's a channel behind the static you're probably blocked out. I have no idea how/where to get a cable descrambler.

yeah, the channels are blocked behind the static. Kind of like when I was a kid and I tried desperately to see boobs on HBO late at night.

Nothing's possible with Charter. They've pretty much killed cable piracy in this area.

We got Comcast (actually it was AT&T back then) cable internet way back in the day. Before the put filters on.

Just put the splitter on, sent one to the TV and one to the modem, free basic cable TV.

I've lost interest in free basic cable. They are the same channels that come through the antenna, so I'm not going to worry about it.
