| Globe Trekker | I read that whole thing, and while I agree with a lot of it there's quite a lot that doesn't sound very scientific. The bit about preparing for self sustainability is absolutely true though. I wish I had those fucking solar panels on the roof already, but the truth is my current house really isn't suited for what is needed. I need at least a few acres of land for the growing of food and raising of livestock, in addition to the solar panels and an electric powered vehicle, and lots and lots of ammunition. If I had all that I could easily weather a total collapse. The house would need to be out of sight though, to cut down on people trying to come in and take what I had. | I'm against that. | That article was crap. The Russians were able to survive a social collapse because of the invasive central government? Please, it was likely due to the fact that they had to deal with such an ineffective government that they learned to survive on their own. We're however in an economic state where despite the government's failure to provide we can survive in spite of it and do quite well. The show Jericho comes closest to showing how America will be post-social collapse. I really think we'll return far more power to local and state governments. You'll also see the return of family and small community enclaves. 1-10 families on a patch of land growing to survive and protecting what they have. I'd give the country a decade or two of that until a New Deal type government emerges to rebuild the infrastructure. Oh and economic collapse and people abandoning their homes because of foreclosure? Please, people now don't abandon their homes in the event of a foreclosure much less would if there were widespread issues. |

| outside the box! | They don't abandon thier homes. Banks are holding so many pieces of real estate around here that are empty and taxes/insurance have to be paid on, that they're hurting really bad. evberywhere, every block, has five to six homes sitting vacant! That is a helluva lot of property tax, insurance and maintanance to have to pay out every single month for the banks. People aren't ababndoning homes, but the county sherrifs' office is busy removing them from thier homes in my home town. I have no doubt we will survive a collapse. That alone may save this nation. bring us back together eventually. I wonder how possible it is that collapse is an inevitability. and all that is happening is simply postponing things until the upper eschelon covers thier asses for the reconstruction. 122112 is just around the corner [/ :tinfoil] |

| Optimus Prime | I sorta wonder why. You'd figure that leaving occupants in houses would be the smart move for banks; it would keep most of the systems from atrophying and (most) people like to take care of their houses so the banks at least, while not getting money from their mortgages, would at least have people mowing the lawn, keeping the paint job up etc. Would make them easier to sell on. | outside the box! | There has to be some sort of incentive for the mortgages to be paid. You ever wonder why homeless people are allowed to beg on street corners? It's a reminder to all of us middle class of what happens if we get out of line. |
