I live in a small town of about 17,000 and we only have one phone company and one cable company which means two internet options.

Both companies suck ass, sbc and charter.

Does anyone have any experience on how to get new service providers in your city? I'm sure you have to go to the city office but where and exactly who and what do I tell them?

im pretty sure it would be pretty dificult to get a new service unless you have thousands of people complaining.

I don't think it would be hard to draw up complaints against sbc and probably charter. It's pretty easy to persuade people that more competion would be better.


But that's not the question. I want more options and I want to know how to get them.

If you keep the cable, you can get Skype Out and just use your computer for all telephone service. Satellite is probably an option to replace the cable but it sucks and would suck bawls for talking with Skype.

That's the problem, charter is like $45 a month with speeds similar to the lowest dsl speed sbc offers. So I could go with charter but I wouldn't be saving any money and my service would still suck.

Believe me I've thought of every way to get away from these two carriers (I even looked into cellular options) but nothing makes sense.

What's wrong with SBC? It's like 14 bucks a month for 1.2mb DSL. It's not blazing fast, but it's also only 14 bucks. I get pings in the teens in games, they've always been reliable, too. Charter sucks though, I don't even know how the fuck they're in business.

I don't like sbc for a lot of reasons one being that their customer service sucks and manage to give me wrong information everytime! Just yesterday I had a lady tell me that they were not responsible for the information they gave me regarding a modem they sold to me.

Another reason is that the way they treat existing customers is wrong. You want that $14.99 plan but you are existing? forget it but they will give you the $19.99 pro package as long as you add $11 in land line features.

The service is fine provided you are close to the switch otherwise you get no where near the advertised speeds. Also if you happen to be in one of their overloaded areas forget about any kind of decent reliable service.
