(You couldn't just put the picture on here or at least link to the flickr page? You had to link to the Digg page... I fixed it. - chapel)

Digg - Beautiful Image of French Nuclear Test Codename "Canopus" (PIC)

All I see is a black hole, and sooner or later they’re going to suck each one of us into it. But when they come for me, I'm going to take as many of them with me as I can.

That's sweet! Amazing how something that looks so cool can be so absolutely devastating.

the power those yield is just unbelievable. i wonder how far away that picture was taken.

the other question i always wondered is how far away from the blast is there a noticeable temperature increase? like as the heat radiates from ground zero, how many miles out radius-wise would there be a temperature increase?

god, i'm a dork.

Trinity test - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:
At 4:45 a.m. a crucial weather report came in favorably, and at 5:10 a.m. the twenty-minute countdown began. Most top-level scientists and military officers were observing from a base camp ten miles (16 km) southwest of the test tower. Many other observers were around twenty miles (32 km) away, and some others were scattered at different distances, some in more informal situations (physicist Richard Feynman claimed to be the only person to see the explosion without the dark glasses provided, relying on a truck windshield to screen out harmful ultraviolet wavelengths[5]). The final countdown was read by physicist Samuel K. Allison.

At 05:29:45 local time (Mountain War Time), (11:29:45 GMT) the device exploded with an energy equivalent to around 20 kilotons of TNT (87.5 TJ). It left a crater of radioactive glass in the desert 10 feet (3 meters) deep and 1,100 ft (330 meters) wide. At the time of detonation, the surrounding mountains were illuminated brighter than daytime for one to two seconds, and the heat was reported as being as hot as an oven at the base camp. The observed colors of the illumination ranged from purple to green and eventually to white. The roar of the shock wave took 40 seconds to reach the observers.[4] The shock wave was felt over 100 miles (160 km) away, and the mushroom cloud reached 7.5 miles (12 km) in height. As Los Alamos director J. Robert Oppenheimer watched the demonstration, he later said that a line from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita came to mind: I have become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

Isn't it cool, how when you change the scale of physical events/properties, like heat, in this case, the results are phenominal.
I'm convinced, that everything is a matter of scale. Physics claims that
the laws of physics dictates that some things are imposible. I believe that all things are possible, if you find the right properties to change on the right scale......or combinations of scales. ...>>>...atomic/cellular....cellular/organ.....organ/ organism>>>etc...on the biological, >>>...atomic/matter...matter/element...element/mineral>>>etc.
Combinational? >>>subatomic/organism?...atomic/galactic?
it's a matter of what you change on what scale. And that's why the physical properties of a firecracker exploding are not producing anything like the properties of a hydrogen thermonuclear device explosion.
Another example? Thermonuclear device/supernova......it's all scale, and the combinations/effects are infinate.

why are people testing this type of shit, if your not suppose to use it. There must be some ecological effects of setting off a weapon like that.

I disagree, here is a photo taken earlier in the blast:

I'm not raggin' on you MT, I'm glad you didn't have to live the "duck and cover" shit and CD alerts.
Oh, it's cool what that much heat does. that's what I was throwing out there when I spoke of "scale". A real neat scene is an atmospheric fusion detonation.
