no this is not an i hate cats or wiskas is a crazy cat man thread

i have this dog, his name is benji and hes a 4 year old (guessing) rottweiler

he loves me to peices, he stands up for me if someone is being offensive towards, hes very playful...but he cant stop growling at me, if i try to pet him indoors or with other people around he growls loudly and bears his teeth. hes been doing it since we got him 2 years ago. ive tried every trick in the book from wackin his nose with a news paper, to a muzzle, to crating him. the only thing i havnt tried is a shock collar but that will be last resort. any body here have suggestions on how i could get him to stop growling?

first thing you never hit a dog with a news paper or anything else for that matter. This only makes him more agitated and offensive. What he is trying to do is master you. Take him to some training or obedience classes. If those don't work then he is to aggressive and either needs to be put down, or given to someone who can control him

All I see is a black hole, and sooner or later they’re going to suck each one of us into it. But when they come for me, I'm going to take as many of them with me as I can.

well he doesnt become really offensive hes only bitten me once and it was more of a nip than a bite. and i only hit him with the paper once because then became very scared, after that no more physical abuse.

does it really take a dog more than 2 years to become dominent over a hooman?

thanks smirnoff ill read that in a minute

Every dog is different. Some breeds are more submissive by nature, and some are not. Some will try to be dominant until the day they die. It doesn't mean that the dog isn't good, or that they might hurt you. It just means they will challenge you more. It might also be that he just has too much energy, and doesn't know where to channel it.

How often do you play with him? Do you ever take him running or walking? Do you ever get him riled up and wrestle around with him? Do you ever really wear him out?

oh yea, he and i are great running/ workout buddies he has a soccer ball and sometimes i take him up to my schools soccer field and play around with him, hes great at getting the ball....and not giving it back. i run with him every once in a while. and every day i try to wrestle with him but 120 pounds of dog is hard to move to the ground when you only weigh 135 pounds.

He's probably just trying to be dominant to you or something. Rots are mean dogs.

Watch a few episodes of The Dog Whisperer and you'll know everything you need to know about owning a dog.

yea i was gonna say, download or buy a few seasons of the dog whisperer or catch it on natgeohd, its on all the time.

the problem is.. rotts are naturally aggressive, its in the genes. with that said it can be a horrid journey trying to make him more of a peoples pet.
smacking him, muzzling, and shock collars are only going to make him worse.
personally, i think rotts and pits are dead end dogs.

Wow you guys are definitely misguided. I grew up around rotts with my dad and have had no issues with them. It is all in how you train them and also the owners personality.

We had one, probably the best dog Ive ever known. Borris was his name, he was a full blood rott and the nicest dog you would ever meet. He was trained to attack on command, but at the same time never nipped or bit anyone unless provoked or commanded. He was gentle with children. We had friends afraid of dogs and after spending time with Borris ended up wanting to get a dog of their own. He got cancer so we had to put him down, we built him a coffin and burried him at our lake cabin where he loved to play.

Our current rott will growl and flare his teeth when he is eating or sometimes laying down and you hover over him. We pretty much ignore it, my dads ex gave the dog some bad habits and we have got most taken care of but he regresses sometimes. Love him though.

Is it really worth the risk and effort? Why not just get a dog with a friendly temperament to begin with? I don't think I've ever thought I could love a dog less because it doesn't have the instinct to kill.

There's always that one person who will stand up for any breed of dog

Anyways, my notion is don't hit more dominance oriented dogs. Yeah, it may have them respect you in the end, but it just teaches them that physical dominance is all the more important and who knows how they will use that in the end.

Just pinch the dog and go chhh!
Seems to work for that vato dog whisperer.

Rotts aren't mean they are very smart and strong. They are a working class breed. Just because they are vilified in movies and other media does not make them inherently mean or bad dogs.
