| Cheap Bastard | Let my stream of consciousness flow (that's the fancy way of saying I'm about to rant).... What I'm going to say next might get me labeled as some kind of conspirator, commie, or terrorist (especially the latter, because that seems to be the word being thrown around for whoever expresses disapproval towards the USA now). The way in which I perceived the USA back when I was living in Venezuela changed when I came over here and saw how things really are. Granted, it was probably naive of me to think that the USA was perfect, but that's exactly the kind of message that your country sends to foreign countries and their inhabitants--I'm not alone on that one. That's why people come here for the American dream. It's a bit deceiving, to be honest. For example, the fact that poverty exists in this country is not something a lot of people outside the country know about--at least not to the degree in which it exists. You don't talk about it, you neglect it. I'm not saying that poverty is something that you should be proud of, but admitting that there are problems not just to yourselves but to others instead of projecting a false sense of wellness, for lack of a better word, just sucks. News here is entirely different from news that you see around the world. The media downplays and makes a theater/circus out of some issues, keeping the country entertained instead of informed. Remember OJ Simpson, Laci Peterson, Terri Schiavo, Michael Jackson? How the fuck were these news relevant? IMHO, they didn't deserve the amount of coverage that they got. If you're, like, "meh," so far, now this is the part that might make your blood boil, and that's OK. Remember we're just expressing opinions here. I'm glad, to a certain extent, that 9/11 happened. Please hear me out! I'm not saying that I'm happy that innocent people died in the hands of a small group of wackos, but that it made this country realize, "hey, there's holes in the system," that your country is not so perfect after all. Same with Katrina. Again, the magnitude of these things make people reflect upon the fact that there's bigger things than themselves out there, and that's what I'm trying to get at. People here are so arrogant and so biased... they can't see past their noses. That's the true American attitude. Americans should be more objective and not be blinded by patriotism and all the bullshit that has been fed to them over the years. | |

| It's a series of tubes. | There will always be some amount of poverty in any country. The fact is that some people will make horrible decisions with their life and end up poor. The difference between this country and many others is that here people have every opportunity to succeed. They control their own destiny. | |

| Globe Trekker | I have no idea how America is portrayed in other countries. But I always hear it described as free and "the land of opportunity". Never have I heard it described as "the land of zero poverty". New Zealand is a welfare state, and people don't have to work there if they don't want to. And guess what? They're changing the system because it breeds a nation of lazy people who live off the government. | |
