***SPOILER THREAD***

alright, i just watched this movie and really enjoyed it for what its worth.
god bless, the effects used were waaayy ahead of their time. The movie was extemely "artsy" as well.. which is cool.

Can someone please help me understand the ending? I understand most of the movie, but the ending had me kinda... how should i say it.. i felt like i was fucking high. I can only imagine the hippies getting stoned in the movie theaters when this came out in 68

ive been all over the internet, and everyone either has a different opinion or doesnt make sense either. I havent been to the 2001kubrick explanation site yet, but everyone says its still unclear, so im not going to waste my time.

what do you think of the movie?

I read the book before I saw the movie. The book was just as cryptic and nebulous as the film. What I got was that if taken in this context: "for every person that has ever lived and died on earth, there is a star in the sky, upon their death, a person becomes a new star or "star child" and returns to the universe" then at the end of the movie, the astronaught looses his human existence and is born as a "star child"; meaning he got killed and was reborn into the universe; as a new star. Some thing like that.

The end of the sixties was a wierd and psychologically experimental and abstract time. I prefer todays movies that don't rely on headtrips, but rather, rely on groundbreaking special FX.

I think there's a fair amount of intentional ambiguity in the film - see the Wikipedia page. The book is a bit clearer, and the first sequel 2010: Odyssey Two, goes into more detail about it, and is a good book as well.

you mean with the "windows media player" visuals?

He gets trapped in the monolith, which is actually a warp (oh my god it's full of stars) he gets taken to a room, where the things that created the monolith study him, kind of like a zoo kinda thing. when that is over and he "dies" bowman gets reborn as a Star Child. basically he becomes a God.

I try not to research heady movies like that too much. I like the mystery, like for the movie to keep my mind churning. Like Donnie Darko, I didn't sit down and read all of the fan sites about it because for me it would ruin the fun.

even with all the fan site help, its still one of those movies where "it is what you make of it"

I kind of lean towards a graduation from this existence to something along, perhaps, those lines. It's kind of hard to believe that this is all there is. the movies are better while not stoned IMO.

Yeah, I just watched A Clockwork Orange earlier this week. I didn't enjoy it all that much and I really can't put my finger on it. Its a disturbing film, but that doesnt turn me off to it. I love the visuals, as I loved the visuals in 2001. I just didn't get anything out of the film.

Seeing 2010 did help a little, and I read parts of the books, but after viewing the films, I found it hard to keep interest.

This is kind of ironic. I bought Donnie Darko and am going to watch it for the first time ever in the next few hours.

I know, I know. My friends consider me the biggest movie buff, but they always have movies I haven't seen, this is one of them.
