The dark brown parts can click out just a little, then you slide the cable in, then click the dark brown part back. I have terrible luck with this sort of ribbon connector, and deal with them as little as possible.

Is it that you can't get it in, or that it's too short?

I had the same problem when i was disconnecting the motor that reset's the lazer level. Turn the ps2 over, open the bottom section. Take out the expantion compartment and the metel shield off the motherboard. Then you'll see the other end of the wires. Closest goes to closest farthest goes to farthest with the cables. Flip the top of the part that holds the cable in and take them out. Connect the drive side first and get it in place and you can easily put the cables back in when you do it from the motherboard side. Just enough room.
