I followed all the steps in the repair guide (so handy, thank you for that!) but I'm having one issue I didn't see covered in there. When I rotate the white gear and test out a game, the gear slides right back to where it was when I started. Did I miss something? Is there a way to keep it from rotating back?

On some models it will reset. The fix is to follow the backside of the metal gear that the white plastic gear connects to, and disconnect its motor. Somewhere it has an electrical motor that resets the white gear via a 2nd gear or tab. This step is covered briefly in the guide.

Since my PS2 doesn't have this feature, I can't really explain it better than that, but give it a shot and see if you know what I mean.

Found what you were talking about. It worked to keep the gear where I changed it to, but I still get nothing but DRE. Ah well... I suppose PS3 will be out soon enough. Thanks again!

Gabs: Try the other tips in the guide, especially the quick fix with tape and the voltage adjustment if you're inclined. It sounds like you're really close to fixing the problem.
