| Junior Member | Hi, I've had my PS2 since it came out, so it's been a number of years now. This is the first time that I've ever had a problem with it. What happens is during the initial start up or during the first FMV (depending on the game) my PS2 starts to make a very loud cranking or clicking sound. Definitely not a normal PS2 sound. When that happens the game starts to skip (if in a FMV sequence) or during normal gameplay just freeze (sometimes restarting, most of the time not) and the sound skips (e.g. in GTA: San Andreas the sound of the cars gears shifting and the engine reving would play repeatedly). Smacking it on the cover can help sometimes, but it hasn't been working recently. I haven't dropped my PS2 or damaged it and it's fairly clean. I preformed the recommended fix, but it didn't help. I think it could have something to do with the laser alignment or the white gear in the back of the disk drive. During the recommended fix I was playing with the gear and putting it at either end of it's range (on both sides before it became solid with out the notches in it) eliminated the sounds, but the disc wouldn't read (though I didn't get a disk read error either). Could anyone help me out? Thanks in advance. |

| Chief Webologist | If you eliminated the sounds with the gear adjustment, there's a good chance it could fix the rest of your problems, too. Did you try adjusting it in tiny increments (say, 1 or 2 clicks at a time) before re-testing? Sometimes there's a fine line between Disc Read Error and perfect operation. |

| Junior Member | Hi, My PS2 does the same thing and now it is unplayable. When I turn it on and try to start a game, it just makes that loud clicking/cranking sound. I opened it up and tried to see what was going on and it seems like the little fin attached to the laser that runs in the thread grooves on the long screw-like gear is just skipping across the threads and not moving the laser. Is there a way to repair this? Can I adjust fin or do I need to grease something up to make it slide easier? I just bought a game before it broke and I want to play. Thanks for any help you can offer. Moe |
