FIRST - read this guide -- it covers the complete repair for most older versions. It does not cover details on replacing a broken lens or adjusting voltage, but there are some threads in this forum on various topics such as this and we're compiling a better FAQ.

SECOND - actually perform the steps! Don't ask if it will fix your problem. Just try it first. Most disc read errors, stuck at browser, skipping during games, etc. can be fixed with the basic repair process.

THIRD - if you're still stuck or you can help others, post here.

I followed the instructions on adjusting the white gear to fix the "disc read error" problem, and it worked! however, no matter how i adjusted the gear the machine still wouldn't play DVD's and still got stuck loading certain games like castlevania lament of innocence and GTA: san andreas. so i followed the instructions in the second part of the guide, the ones about removing the laser lens and cleaning the second lens underneath the top one and now the PS2 wont play a damn thing, no games, no dvds, not even a music CD.
