I got my little brother a PS2 for his birthday - a PAL SCPH75003 - and after a week I got cries of 'bruvva - it's broken'.

It'll play CDs fine, and I've not tried it with PS1 games, but with PS2 games it will go through the sequence to read the beginning of the disk, but then, whilst spinning at 1x speed, the lens will move up and touch the start of the DVD - like it's not focusing on it.

I repair computers for a living, but to me, a CD drive is a sealed unit. I'm grand with drivers, CPUs, viruses and stuff, but I need a little help here.

What is the issue, and how can I solve it? And, is there such a thing as a service manual for a 75003 PS2?

There are lengthy manuals for sale on Ebay, but most are similar to our free guide or cost upwards of $20.

Have you taken it apart yet to examine it? Is the 75003 a slim-line model or is it the classic sized playstation 2?

It's a slim. I've looked through your free guide, but it doesn't seem to cover the slim models.

I've got it in bits on my work bench, and I can see the CD / DVD calibration pots (which I presume are voltage-based?) but no lens height / angle adjustment screws / cogs that I can see.

Is there a manual similar to your fantastic manual that covers this for the slims?
