Diesel is like 4+ bucks a gallon. I don't know how much more mileage you'll get out of it though.

man if I could average 22mpg on my explorer, I'd probably keep it. but i get like 12 and that's with driving nice and hypermiling pretty good. I'm in the same boat kinda. I need to get rid of my explorer. man that 97 accord for only $4250 with only 83,000 miles on it. I'd snatch that up in a second. there just aren't deals like that here. i'm looking to pay a max of $6,000 and there reall isn't any accord that have even less than 150,000 miles on them. and they certainly aren't a 1997. for $6k, an Accord with relatively low miles isn't happening for me. I'll have to get an american car to get anything with decent mileage.

OK I saw this Camry listed for $9k

cars.com: 1999 Toyota Camry LE

I emailed the dealer after seeing the KBB value is $7k in excellent condition...I asked if their price was firm and the reply was they'd sell it for 7k. Any thoughts?

i'd go check it out, but make sure to take it to at the very least 1 mechanic. I like to inspect cars myself first, then bring it to the manufacture(toyota dealership mechanic) and then finally my own personal mechanic... but then i'm pretty paranoid and extremely picky :P

if you know a good toyota dealership do have them look at it.

IMO that generation of camry is a big part of how toyota has the image that it does. its boring to look at and drive, but its an extremely well build car, parts are reasonable, mileage is pretty good. IMO you won't find much better of a car. I'd still opt for an older corolla of that same generation, but thats purely because its a lighter smaller car. its not any better built.

wow, i just now actaully looked at the pictures and that thing is cclllleeaaaannnn. I'd jump on that asap assuming everything checks out well mechanically.

if you like it tell the dealer you will give them a deposit(200ish normally works) but that you want to have a toyota mechanic look over it first. this is never a problem unless they have something to hide.

My friend is a mechanic so I'll see if I can take it for a test drive over to his job and let him take a peek at it. I can't believe the dealer said he'd take off $2k in an email; I bet I can get it lower.

You're right. When I called yesterday the guy basically said there's nothing wrong with the car but they don't really want it either (kinda saying what you did but in a diff way). I drove it today and runs great. I'm going back tomorrow to pick it up and drive by my friend's to get it looked at. HOpefully they'll lower the price even more.

Edit: I forgot to mention - they've put $500 labor/parts into it with inspection checks and new tires.

Damn...they wanted $7500 out the door and I wanted 6k out the door...oh well, onto other cars. I figured if I offered cash they'd take it but nope.
