So I want a project car that I could screw around with to learn how cars work...

What I really want is a car from the 30's 40's or 50's...

I don't want it to be a racer, I would just want a stock engine and fix it up. I just love that era of cars.

Any ideas and what kind of car?

first you have to ask yourself how much money you want to spend. if you just want something to screw around on to learn how cars work i dont think those years are a good choice. most anything cheap is going to be a complete wreck in need of a full resto, which might be too much for you to take on right now.

i think it's better you pick something newer, but not too new you can have a lot of fun building and driving. my suggestion would be an early 90's mazda miata with a ford 5.0l v8 fitted. www.v8miata.com is a guy who sells complete conversion kits for under 4 grand. i know what you're thinking "miata's are gay", i have been at the guys shop and he took me for a ride in his own car. with a stock 5.0 that thing RIPS, handles like a go-cart too.you can have a complete car, nicely done for under 10 grand out the door, including price of the car.

if you're a little more budget minded, www.converseengineering.com seels chevy small block swap kits for older rwd volvos. very sleeper and can be had for VERY little money. the cars are simple and super easy to work on.

my 2 cents.

that sounds good, but I really do not want to mess with v8"s and stuff lol.

My other choice would be those 80"s volvos or BMWs, or Mercedes. You know, the really boxy style cars..

I"ll check that stuff out anyways.. Thanks

boxy volvo's are my specialty

older volvo 240's and 740's can be had for next to nothing (and even free sometimes), are easy to fix, maintain and upgrade. the turbo models respond very well to simple modifications and can be tons of fun to drive. check out www.turbobricks.com for more info.

to be honest with you, it doesnt get much simpler than a pushrod v8. the small block chevy and ford v8's have been around forever and the aftermarket is near infinite. that means you will have no problem finding parts for very little money

I have a 1986 Volvo 240 wagon I'd sell super cheap. It's located in Groton, CT, though. It has new tires, was just tuned up, new brakes, and the oil changed. She runs great, and has right at 215,000 miles on the 4-cyl gas motor. It also has the 5 speed manual (4 speed with push button o/d). It's one hell of a cool car... Even has full leather with all options (PW, PL, heated seats). I'd sell her cheaper than you would be able to find one (in this shape) for.

If you want something to learn on since you don't know much about cars, get something basic from the 60's, or if you want something newer I'd get a Honda or some shit like that, they're easy as fuck to work on.
