I am gonna start a project car going to get the frame and body of either an 1970 El Camino or a 1970 Pontiac GTO. Trouble is I dont know much about cars so I am going to be asking you guys tons of questions. First off how do you know if a certain transmission will fit with your engine. Any books you think I could get to go read up on it a bit.

Well first off both of those cars are cool but for a beginner i would take the el camino just cause you can tons of aftermarket for them i.e. body panels and interior pieces they have a good interchange,

the tranny all depends on which car you choose and any popular magazine like car craft or chevy hi-performance or anything along those lines will help you get started

I think this would be a nice starter although shipping costs so much I am gonna look for something local first. and 1975 close enough not nearly as awesome but I like that car.

You'll need EVERYTHING

If you don't know what kind of tools you need for a project car, you shouldn't have a project car

Yeah, fuck learning experiences.

Just realize as a first project car, and having limited tools its going to be a very long process.

You'll need to learn everything as youre going, and now most likely youre going to buy tools as you go. Which may be expensive. Which may mean more waiting for that money to come in.

You may want to find a Camino forum, they'll have a garage forum that should totaly help you out.

i personally hate those el camino body styles, 73-77 4th gen.

you can go to elcaminocentral.com they will help you out.

also you will need a ton of tools for this one and someone with experience

an old chevy wont be that hard for a project car. you dont even need that many tools, unless your building components like an engine/transmission/rear end. old chevys are easy as hell to work on, i love em.

but dont take it personal if you make some mistakes on the car, its a learning experience, a VERY satisfying one at that.
