Well I've got a dumb question im sure someone can answer, i've got a 1995 chevy s10 ZR2 that is in dire need of a new exhaust system. Im replacing everything from the header back. The header to cat pipe can be ordered from Autozone no problem and I have my Cat picked out from Summit Racing. MagnaFlow 93483 - MagnaFlow Direct-Fit Catalytic Converters - summitracing.com.
The only problem i've run into is finding the right muffler... Magnaflow makes the right style I need, 2.5" Center outlet and 2.5" offset Inlet, but they have a variety of lengths that gets me all confused. The muffler currently in my truck measures about 27" case length and 35" overall length. I don't think this is the right muffler for my truck though because it hangs too low and i know my exhaust system was just cut and welded from scrap to get it to pass emissions. Does it make a difference what length my muffler is? As long as my hanger brackets line up and can be welded to fit I don't see a problem but I just want to make sure.

Whatever muffler I get ill have to have a muffler shop weld the 3 bolt bracket onto the inlet so it can bolt to the cat, and the muffler back pipe will also have to be made at the shop since im not using the stock muffler. Any specific shops I should stay away from like Midus or whatnot?

The shorter the muffler the louder it is...the longer the muffler the quieter it will be. It also depends on the style of the muffler..some are straight through some are chambered....So depending on how loud you want it and the exhaust note you want the muffler size and shape will vary.

And find a mom and pop muffler shop. They usually do the best jobs for a reasonable price and usually charge by the weld and not by the hour.

my .02

your making this whole exhaust ordeal out to be more than it should be. Just go to a muffler shop and tell them what you want done and that you want a new muffler. They will ask you some questions to help you choose the right muffler, i.e. how loud do you want the truck and what not. They should be able to get it done a lot cheaper than you buying all this new exhaust.

Thanks 86mcss, Im looking at the Magnaflow performance series mufflers so they should be chambered and not straight through. Im probably going to go with a medium sized muffler, certainly not as big as the one currently in my truck. Ill find out what will work best when I measure it all out one of these days.

I know I've been making this a big deal for myself, but after watching to much Trucks on spike TV I was made to believe that exhaust systems just bolted on. Now knowing the this is not the case and hanger brackets needed to be welded on as well as some pipes bend Im annoyed because this isn't something I can do myself.

So The new exhaust will be coming either mid winter or the beginning of spring depending on my time, this friday my redone bed should be finished and then I will start on the top engine rebuild next.

Im going to replace the whole system because the pipes are badly rusted and starting to rot plus the cat is most likely damaged from when the original engine blew. Yeah there's a lot of a story behind my truck.

I think you should get a muffler that bends to the side of the truck instead of to the back

Thats a sexy truck for sure!!!

The rims are black bead locks with 4.5" back spacing.

The truck had a 2" body lift and was cranked up front. I was rolling 32" tires...

I had a K&N cai and gibson exhaust. The truck sounded awesome.

Any more questions?

Stock height Zr2 with a 2" body lift.

A Zr2 is a factory lifted s10.

The silverado in my signature is lifted 11 inches.
