This morning, my car did this:

The heater blew out cold air
my engine temperature rose hella fast, to 7/10 (10 being max) and then dropped to 5/10 a second later and did this dance for like a minute or two and then my heater started pumping out warmer air but at a much lower temperature than before.
That was my drive to work in the morning

At night i start my car to go home, the engine temp rises to 1/10, 2/10, 3/10, etc like normal and as soon as i turn on my heater it blows out cold air and the engine temp jumps to 6/10 then 7/10 and kind of bounces around 5/10 to 7/10 then it starts to climb to 8/10 and i pull over for a few minutes. after a few minutes I start my car again, it is at 5/10 and eventually climes to 9/10 and I get home 10 seconds later after it gets to 9/10 so i never got to 10/10 thank god. So when I get home I check the oil, that is fine and then I check the anit freeze/colant levels and well, it pretty much has no water.

My question is, even if the engine had no water, why would my heater not work? Why was the temps jumping around like that? I am going to take anotehr car to buy some proper colant for my car and drive it around and test the heater and if it still does not work, i will take it to the dealer since it is under warranty.

Fuck me, i hope i didnt do any permanite damage, my drive to and from home is only 4miles each way and its like 35 degrees outside.

Yep..

There's a radiator behind your glovebox that the coolant system runs through. So when your car is warm, the heater can blow hot air. Sometimes they crack or go bad and they begin to leak.

That coolant may be behind your dash or on your passenger carpet. I'd check to see if it's wet at all. That's a pretty common thing to fail once every 5-10 years on most cars and it's a pain in the ass to fix because you have to remove the whole dash (on most cars)... but it's cheap for the parts (<$100).

--OR--
It's possible the heater core is OK but the coolant hose at the heater core is ripped.

This would cause your car to heat up indefinitely without leaking a lot of coolant necessarily under your hood. It could've leaked right at the firewall, and you might not have ever seen it.

I'd check for leaks (refill the system and idle the car until warm) under the hood before you suspect a heater core.

How are your coolant levels? Low? If it's normal it could be something else.

Does your A/C compressor click on when you turn the heat on? You could have a screwed up system that turns on the A/C. Having the AC pump running will heat your engine up.

thats the reason your thermostat was going crazy as well. The temp probe was getting air bubbles, and then only air. It doesn't read accurately without being submersed in the coolant.

Check your heater core by pulling your heater hoses off and blowing compressed air or something through. If it goes through, it's not broken. If you feel it come out, then it's time for a heater core. But if you're losing coolant it's either leaking or burning it up.. don't you have a warranty?

I am sorry, I take my basic understanding of cars for granted. No insult or anything but people like Ali amaze me that you can know so little about a car.

I make myself laugh.

Hell no don't take a class. Get a Haynes or Chiltons.

If that book can't help you fix it, then take it in.

Update:
I took my car to the dealer, they looked at it and said that i have a serious problem. something about the shortblock or small block and coolant leaking all the fuck everywhere. so its going to take 3 or 4 days to fix since they need to order parts so they gave me a rental car.

<3 new car warranty

btw my rental car is a craptastic lancer es, man that car sucks balls compared to a simple civic.

Where's that honda reliability now?? j/k

You did have antifreeze mixed with the coolant right? If they replaced the shortblock, then there must have been a serious problem with the block (aka cracked). I don't see how that would happen on a newer car. Oh well, at least you have it under warranty.

Ha! No shit. What model / year Honda do you have Ali?

My guess is he's been humping the radiator and the coolant system was clogged with baby batter.

Driving without coolant shouldn't crack the block. The pistons will seize and the head gasket could go from overheating, which will eat all the coolant.

I did not drive the car again until I filled the car up with the recommended honda type 2 coolant which is a 50/50 mix of water and death.

Its the other way around, something caused the coolant to basically disappear/leak since as soon as i started my car in the morning (this was on 1/19) and drove about 200ft (this is when i usually turn on the fan for the heater) and noticed the air coming out of the vents was as cold as outside and USUALLY around this time the air coming out is somewhat warm. so yeah, the leaking happened before it ever started to overheat. now, me driving it as it started to overheat, yeah, maybe that did other damage.

I am just glad to have my car back, a base model 2007 lancer is just depressing.
