Did you try a 39 dollar trans flush/filter/fluid change first? Transmission shops are crooks! of coarse they're going to say that you need to re-build the damn thing....you could go in there with a missing dipstick and they'll say you need a rebuild. I've never had any trans shop not say that I need a rebuild.
I have seen/heard alot of commercials claiming "free inspections" though. if anything, you probably just needed a flush, filter and perhaps replacement of a scorched clutch band. Those places are a rip-off. When an auto trans heats up, the hydrolic fluid expands, that's why you check trans fluid when your trans is hot. You were probably just low on fluid. did you notice any fluid on the ground where you park....ever?
How about: did you check your fluid levels? if so, did you smell to see if it smelled burnt? these are basic maintenance things. If you don't perform these things, of coarse there are going to be businesses out there to take advantage of you. Out of that 1700 dollar trans R&R, they probably pay their mech 100 bux and 150 bux for the used tranny from the junk yard.....add 50 bux for biz tax znd overhead and you just made 1400 bux for the repair shop. Tip: take a perfectly good car into a trans shop for a "free inspection" act totally dumb and see what they say. I used to do that, just to fuck with them when I was bored and needed something to do. Most claimed that I needed a rebuild, some just gave me quotes for "needed repairs". I'm not trying to rag down on you, I just have a suspician that you've been ripped off. You were low on fluid or your filter was plugged up. Sorry if I'm being a grump.

Say goodbye to our beloved planet. Because there is
alot more money to be made in emitting greenhouse
gasses, than curtailing emissions.

Get out of the box, then recycle it.

Wiskas, have you been to the boneyard lately? I recently priced a rear end for my van at $850! I shopped around as I gave some thought to doing it myself, swap the whole thing but my tranny guy convinced me to let him do the rebuild. Charged me $1500 and I get a guarantee. I figure It would have taken me 2 days plus new parts, brakes, U-bolts, shocks, etc, so I came out ahead. If I pulled the axle I would have replaced it all, now I will do these things as needed or at my leisure.

no I took it to several shops and had the free inspection done at each one. The fluid was checked and flushed out and everything. I took it to a mechanic buddy of mine who said the same thing that it needed to be rebuilt.

Demand the parts that get replaced back. Your box of fubar parts should include: A valve body and/or pistons&springs, pump, hi/low& intermediate bands, torque convertor, bearings-front and back, seals -input and output shaft, hydrolic actuators and seals, a collection of o-rings and gaskets....now that's a rebuild. i'll bet you just get back a bad filter and a couple burnt bands, maybe a couple gaskets. Automatic transmission FTL.
Standard transmission FTW!
