I saw the California a few weeks ago on another forum. It is a good looking car, but only from certain angles. It's to busy, and downright ugly depending on where you look at it.

at least porcshes look good from all angles (although I'm sure the new taillights will be a point of contention)

I've never been a huge fan of Porche's personally (sorry Dan) and the fact that they haven't changed much in the past 20 years look-wise doesn't help.

Eh..Porsche, beides the Carrera GT, has yet to impress me. They still have the engine in the wrong place. Notorious for understeer yet great for drag racing but then again who drag races a Porsche?

What on earth are you talking about? Porsches aren't good for drag racing except arguably the automatic/AWD Turbos. Most people road race them -- and TONS of owners do race them very competitively despite having the engine in the "wrong place"

The only Porsches that understeer are the AWD models, and that can be changed pretty easily with bigger sway bars (~$600) or aftermarket suspension. The last thing you want with a back heavy RWD car is oversteer anyway. The Boxster and Cayman are mid-engine and some of the best handling cars ever made. Then there's the GT3...

The brakes, handling, and engineering of Porsches is top notch. And unlike almost any cars with that kind of power, especially European cars, they hold up very well to abuse. I see at least three or four Porsche turbos with 700+ horsepower each week, all of which have stock motors, transmissions, cooling, and so-on. You can practically breathe on them and they reliably hit 550-600 HP. They really are incredible cars.

I have driven 3 Porshes. A 911 Turbo and 2 911's. The turbo was ok but the 911 were really difficult to control. Maybe it just takes some getting used to. I dunno.

I'm not a big fan of the engine sound/note either. that's just my opinion.

The engines kind of sound like big angry weedwhackers. They're really mechanical. With a good exhaust they sound good. Here's what a GT3 sounds like with our bypass:

What year was the turbo you drove? There were so many changes starting in 2001... that's when they became really amazing. And yeah, the handling is weird.. it takes a lot of practice to get used to them since they're so different, with all the weight and power in the back.

so Dan, I'm thinking of a used Cayman S in the near future (toying around with the idea, mostly)

How easy is it to mod these things? 295hp isn't too impressive for the monies (especially considering what the C6 goes for new), and I don't see too many aftermarket companies around.

I haven't checked the price on too many Caymans, but I was looking at Boxster Ss and they are damn cheap. I'd get one for that reason alone.. but Caymans are basically the same thing, just more rigid. I think a used Cayman S should cost a lot less than a new C6. And power isn't everything.. Caymans handle like a go-kart and are quite a bit lighter than a Corvette.

Modding them... well, it's not super cost effective honestly. You can tack on about 25-30 HP from an exhaust, intake, plenum, and chip. It'll sound amazing (video I made of our shop Cayman S: Porsche Cayman S Modified @ SharkWerks - Video), but those mods add up ... like, $5000 for all that. You're best off looking at it from a different perspective.

If you want to just go fast and handling isn't as huge of a concern, I'd highly recommend a used 996 Porsche Turbo. You can get one for about $45k to $50k (they were over $100k new, easily), and it starts with over 400 HP. With just a chip it'll be over 500 HP and AWD launches it into the 11s no problem.

RWD Porsche don't understeer, they oversteer like any mid rear car would. the Carrera GT is well know for its vicious oversteer. a AWD porshe understeers like most all AWD car's would and do, except Porshe's are less bad then most AWD cars because the engine's in the back so the weight distribution is more towards the back then the front. as dan mentioned its correctable to a certain extent on a front engine AWD car aswell, but it will never be as good as a mid rear AWD car could be.

I was talking about rear-engined cars like the Porsche and Corvair, not mid-engined cars like the 360 / F1 cars.

wow! I'd love to see where you are finding these deals. Every used cayman S I've seen is 45K+, and the 996 turbo is going for around 80K. (although I have seen a few used 01, 02's going for around 55k)

I'd love to own 911 turbo though, that would be badass. I think I may save my money for a while and see what the market on them does. maybe look more seriously come december.

Check Ebay, or 6speedonline.com. There are crazy deals out there on these cars and there are tons of them available. 996 Turbos are such amazing cars. Superior to the 997 in several ways too (turbos, weight, for example).

Ah, gotcha. We don't even work on those here. Porsche made major changes in the 996s to fix tons of the issues from 993s and older. It's a really different car. Try to get a drive in a 996 and tell me how you feel. From my understanding, it's night and day difference.. one was an old rattling Porsche, the other was a full fledged supercar.
