well im still hardcore VW as you all figured, but my first car was an 88 thunderbird with the 2.3 turbo as a few of you know, those who have been around here a while anyways..

the turbo coupe comes with a dinky IHI RHB52 turbo, smaller than a squirrel's nuts on a winter night

anyways my buddy has a 2.3 turbo coupe longblock in his garage, we're going to be rebuilding that, making sure everything is right

and when the block is re-done, it's getting a GT35/40R with a .82a/r hotside. hopefully the 2.3 liters of RAW FUCKING DISPLACEMENT(haha) will be able to spool it within a reasonable timeframe. if not we can always add a touch of nitrous. i dont see why it would be that much of an issue though, my 1.8 liter spools my .63a/r at around 5000

the goal for the pile is 11's, not sure about a WHP number yet. getting started shortly..

what kind of power do those engines take without headwork? i'm mainly thinking of limits on the rods/pistons and how much power they can take reliably. i know next to nothing about 2.3 turbocoupe engines except that a volvo 16 valve head will basically bolt right on...

AER - 05/29/87-10/26/03, I'll never forget.

Heads SUCK on those cars, thats what holds them back.. After you free that up then your all set for boost.

How bout some Holset power for turbos? I want one on my tsi.

i was thinking about this. you cant really compare the spooling capability of a modern multivalve fourcylinder to that of an antique 8 valve notorious for a badly flowing cylinder head. fonz is right, a holset hy35/hx35 will probably be much more economical in the sense that it's a big turbo that doesnt come into efficiency until about 17psi but it still wont break the bank like a GT series will. i'm positive the holset will spool on that motor since volvo guys have been slapping them on their 8 valve 2.3's for years. on a volvo engine with with a decent header an hy35 will spool by 3500-4000rpms.

for a wastegate i suggest going to a pick and pull and getting the external wastegate off an audi 5000 turbo. it's huge and heavy but does the job on the cheap.
