Does anybody know how many miles you can expect to get out of a motorcycle, say a 600cc Honda?

That's good to know. A friend was telling me that 20k+ miles on a motorcycle equated to 150k+ miles on a car. I figured he was full of shit...

Anyway, I'm looking for a quality 600ish CC bike for fun. I was thinking about one of these:

I want an 05 Rebel

It'd be so cheap to get around town on.

if the mileage does get over 100K on a bike you're probably going to have to replace brakes, suspension, etc, a lot of stuff wears out on bikes quickly. and you probably don't want a new bike if you haven't ridden before because you'll most likely drop it.

The Rebel is interesting to me too, but I've been told they are actually dangerous in traffic, etc as they don't have enough power to get out of their own way.

But yeah, I'll probably get a used 600CC with >10k miles on it. They are dirt cheap.

you should go sit in a few bikes and find one that's comfortable, and remember to get a helmet, riding jacket, gloves and shoes. my gloves and shoes have saved me from severe injury countless number of times.

I hadn't thought about boots, but I had planned on a helmet, jacket, and gloves. My buddy has one of those jackets with kevlar in the shoulders, elbows, back, etc.

not many people wear shoes but i would recommend them, they've prevented a broken foot a few times.

Make sure you get an armored jacket, as you stated. A leather jacket is nothing compared to one with the little plates in it.

When my brother layed down his (suzzy)GS500 his back, arms and chest were all perfect, but his legs were fucked becouse he only had jeans on.

I haven't ridden in years. Used to have a cb750ss (the last bike) and the expected miles you could expexct to achieve on a used bike depends on how it's been ridden by the previous owner. Roadrash protection is a must. I highly recoment some decent riding boots.....only thing between your feet and the road. Bikes are fun but I doubt I'll ever ride again as I've had 6 friends die in cycle/car confrontations in the last 4 years. There are alot of drunk, geriatric, and just plain bad drivers in the Grants pass area.

There are bigger Rebels? All I see on the Honda sight are the 250s. And then there are the Shadows.

yeah, if you've never ridden you'll definitely drop it at slower speeds. even experienced riders will drop their bikes because of the unpredictable environment.

My 81 Yamaha 550cc (close to honda I guess) has got 181k without any major engine work.

Miller I wouldn't worry about dropping the bike. It's never happened to me, and I started riding at a scrawny 18yr old kid. I don't even worry about it happening.

So what do you think I could expect to pay for a <20,000 mile 600cc bike? I'd prefer to keep it under a few grand.
