My friend had a pretty sweet peugot 12 speed rotting in his back yard. I asked his uncle(owner of the bike) if he would sell it to me, he gave it to me. The bike is surprisingly clean, new cables, new grip tape, new tires/tube, probably a new chain, and the rear wheel needs to be trued and I'm in business.

I got new tires, tubes, and bar tape. I was told that the back wheel was impossible to true and that I should give up and buy a complete wheel/freewheel set.

So I'm now looking for a new 700c wheel. Any recommendations?

Also, I'm debating painting it gloss white. Anyone want to chime in with your opinions?

I quite like the colour scheme. Sure it's dated, but you can't buy character like that.

Wish I had a bike like that.

I was thinking it was going to be one of those French cars when I started reading this. Nice score none the less.

Nice, I could use a bike like that for riding around here.. I look goofy riding on pavement with knobby tires.

I just got off work and spent a few minutes on it. Looks like the chrome on the forks has a few rust spots, no big deal, I have steel wool. This is it with it's new $20 tires and new presta valve tubes(the first presta's I've ever used). I peeled the grip tape off. The brake levers also had a rubber boot on them, it looks like it turned into goop, and was removed.

I may be able to true the rear wheel. What the mechanic missed was the fact that the wheel has a broken spoke, hopefully I can replace the spoke and sinch it down pulling the rim back in.

Score! I'm contemplating removing the derailer from my front gears to convert my 21 speed to a 7 speed. I don't ever use those gears anyway.

I got a new spoke and trued the rim myself. Fucking lazy mechanics. My bike shop didn't have white brake cables in stock so I just oiled the old ones and reused them for now. Grip tape installed. New seat installed. Derailers, chain, and brakes adjusted and oiled. Bike cleaned. It's almost done already.

You should do what my brother did, get some road tyres to fit your mountain bike. Smoother going, and feels like it can go faster apparently.

I did that on my BMX bike and it made a massive difference. Even with the standard wide tire, if it's smooth tread you'll feel how much nicer it is.
