I went back home to San Diego over spring break last week and I just happened to stumble over pretty much my dream car. It's probably considered a complete piece of shit to most of you but all I see is potential; a blank canvas if you will. It's a 1982 Volvo 240, 2 door coupe with a sunroof (very rare). The car has 204k miles on it with a N/A 2.3l 4 banger and a 4 speed + OD tranny. The body, save for some dings and dents is 100% rust free. Bought it for $450 from a guy in south central LA, tremblay and I were probably the only white people there within a 2 mile radius.

Pictures:

Sorry about the dark picture. you get the idea though

The interior needs a good round with carpet cleaner and the dash is completely trashed from living in the palmdale sun for over 15 years. Other than that it's in excellent shape, no rips or tears anywhere, no stains to speak of. Even the door pockets are uncracked which is nearly unheard of in a car this old.
Sorry, no engine bay shots. Really nothing to see to be honest. It doesn't run as of yet and needs a SMOG certificate, but both of those are simple to fix.

Much like sims' celica, this is going to become my project. I absolutely DESPISE benchracing so what is in store for this piece of vintage swedish iron will be revealed when the time is ripe . This thing should be sufficiently quick to easily beat on most of the boy racers rolling around the area when it's done though.

Here are some teaser pics of parts I have been amassing for the upcoming transformation:

These are 18's btw.

Cams, wrapped and WD-40'd from a volvo of circa '94 vintage.

Bellhousing, pulled from a wrecked volvo built in '96.

With these clues it should be a no brainer for Nebor to figure out what i'm doing

AER - 05/29/87-10/26/03, I'll never forget.

I see the potential. There's someting appealing about old volvos. I often see rich white ladies driving older volvo station wagons instead of new mercedes, which i always thought was funny. Good luck, i'm sure it'll come out sweet.

Shut your mouth and think it out.

Fuck yeah boi, palmdale will fuck your shit up.

You gotta be tough to roll in my city.

I hate that my city is viewed as some harsh ass place. MTV was talking about a video shoot here once and they said the wind will get high enough to rip the paint from your car.

Anyways, nice car. Deffinitely gonna suprise a few ricers once it gets going. And those rims are nice.

This thing is getting a new engine along with some comprehensive chassis mods, but thats all i'm saying for now.

I'm not sure why i have this obsession with old volvos. I think mostly because it's something different; no one expects that ratty old volvo on rims rolling next to you to move with the best of them. It's surprisingly easy to make them pretty quick and coupled with RWD the cars become potent street machines. Since volvo isnt a very big company, a lot of newer parts fit the same scheme and bolt pattern of older stuff. for example the 13" rotors and 4 piston brembo calipers from the new S60R are basically a bold on affair to this car.

Just recently I've started to like the older Volvo's, especially the older square looking wagons. Pure secks.

There once was a man named Bertold
Who drank beer when the weather grew cold
As he reached for his cup...
"NEEEEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP!!!"
Oh, snap! You just got limerickrolled!

nice

I feel the same way about the Celica, everyone expects it to be a girls car

I wish I could say I had the same advantages, next to nothing from the rest of toyota's lineup will bolt onto my car

I'd be willing to bet Seattle is the Volvo 240 capital of the world, they are everywhere!

My best friend drives one too. Many adventures in that tank...

Im not sure what your doing with all those Volvo parts when you should just be pulling the whole thing and droping a nice 5.0 or ls1 in there with a 5/6-speed.

EDIT: forgot my real guess- My real guess is some uber badass i5 with a big blow-dryer hanging off the side.

oh, you DID NOT just say that! if you hadn't added the edit below i would be laying some serious baby-powdered bitchslapping across your face.

seriously though, v8 swaps are sweet and all but i just have an aversion to 40 year old technology. pushrods are not my thing at all. i prefer low displacement, high efficiency powerplants. i'm also something of a volvo purist so i like to keep it in the family so to speak. your edit is pretty much right on the money, though the "uber bad ass" part is a few years down the road

I really want one of those and that looks pretty good for its age. I always wanted a car like that.

Until you play with a modern small black lsx motor you can't really call OHV low tech. Theres a big difference in the 350 pushrod v8 in a 69 Camaro and the LS7 making 500hp/500ftlbs of torque in a new ZO6.
Don't forget, the OHC motor was invented about 40 years BEFORE the first pushrod overhead valve motors.

Not that I don't love turbo inline 4's!
