My old car is collecting dust in my driveway. It is a 94 GTI with 240k. Runs great, still gets good milleage and is fun to drive. New brakes, new shocks, new spark plugs, timing belt has 20k on it. Some rust, some small body damage, missing the cover for one rear speaker, oil pressure sensor needs to be replaced. (I currently have heavy oil in it to bump the pressure up and trick the sensor).

The trouble is I can't find any thing that is close to it for sale in the area so it is hard to guess what it is worth. I think somewhere between $3000 and $5000 maybe?

240k miles? I think you'd be lucky to get $1,000, but I'm no expert. You try BlueBook.com yet? I ran the numbers, without knowing the features and based on your description, and I get $1,525 for a private party sale.

drive it around the world much? 240k is a fuck ton. I wouldn't touch a car with that many miles. might as well keep it as a backup car or something.

He's Canadian. It's kilometers. I would also usually make a joke about the exchange rate, but I wont...

I'm guessing he means 250,000 km instead of miles. Either way hit up kbb.com, nada.com, cars.com and craigslist and see what they're going for.

Ha, ya it is km. 240,000km = 150,000miles.

I found a few online in western Canada for anywhere from $1500 to $7000. Mine will probably go on the lower end of the scale because of the minor problems I explained. Ill list it for $3000 for a few weeks and if it dosen't move lower it to $2000, $1500. I'm in no hurry to sell.

Well duh, of course it's kilometers. I totally missed that. Still, not worth a whole lot. Can you get a tax break in Canada if you donate the car to charity?

That is definitely something I will look into.

It would be a great car to give to a sibling or cousin that is going to school or just got their license but I have none that fit the bill. Maybe I should hand out fliers at the local high school and have the kids compete for it in various events. Midget toss and milk chug come to mind.

The dealer offered us a whopping $500 for my wife's Saturn when we sold it, so we checked out charitable donations. Saint Vincent De Paul appraised it's value as something stupid like $4,000, which we were able to deduct. It was a win/win.

Ohhh, its not a TDI. I dont know where I got that. Anyways, 150k KM on a non-diesel VW.
I'm not sure what you'll fetch up north for it. And I'm not sure KBB would give an accurate figure at all either.

Just keep in mind if anyone in the States is planning on doing this that they changed the law. Rather than being able to deduct a set amount ahead of time, now you can only deduct the amount that the car was actually sold for.

My best friend drives an 85 or possibly 86 Rabbit with over a million km on the original engine and transmission. It rolled over 1 mil when they were driving across Canada last year.

See, if I get another sedan or coupe its gonna be either an old turbo diesel or a TDI. Those things will go forever with proper care.

I have had it for sale on craigs list and auto trader since I posted this for $1500 and no calls. I created a marketplace ad on facebook two days ago and have 2 people that said they will take it @$1500 with out looking at it and one said he wants to look at it this weekend and will probably give me $3000.

I guess I know where I am going when I need to sell stuff from now on.

oh fuckin hell man, have you no soul?

a golf GTI and you want to sell it

its a legendary 'hot hatch' over here!

A good GTI is hard to find here. I used to have a 1.9td red eye over here as my
'rep mobile' and even had a party when I 1st got it coz of the 'cool' blue lit dashboard. It rocked even though it was a diesel! lol.

Me mate used to have a GTI cabriolet and boy did we have fun in that

how sure r u about 'facebook', its a little too open for me?

Why the hell would someone offer $3000 for something listed at half that? Last time someone offered me more than I was listing an item for it was a scammer. Make sure its legit $$$ before you hand the keys over...

I told him a few people were coming to look at it this weekend and he said he was willing to pay up to $3000. There aren't very many MK3 GTIs in the area.

What is your reasoning behind this? I wouldn't touch a VW with 240,000 MILES, but 150k I'd still take it. When looking at Honda's and such I could give a shit less about the mileage. What's the worst thing that can happen, even if you have to put a motor in it, get 1 person on the top and 1 underneath the car disconnecting shit and it'll be out in 45 minutes

Reasoning is that I thought it was a VW with 240k miles, 140k miles is a different story.
