Subaru Outbacks aren't very aerodynamic to begin with. Not to mention that wind resistance doesn't affect you very much mpg-wise unless you're going very fast or are driving a brick with wheels.

I'd say a hood protector is about as bad for your mpg as rolling down your windows. (If even that). If the hood protector did anything aerodynamically, I'd say it would give you a bit of downforce on the front wheels... but it would be very, very little.

These are pretty effective at altering the windstream to pull bugs up and over your windshield. They are particularly effective at highway speeds, and don't do diddly squat at slower speeds.

They do make a big difference on long trips, though. If you do a lot of long distance driving, it wouldn't be a bad investment at all. I've had them on numerous vehicles in the past.
