| Globe Trekker | GM, Chrysler discuss merger or business swap talks - source - Oct. 11, 2008 I knew one of the big three would fold, and I correctly predicted it would be Chrysler. This is good news, a necessary step to get the US auto industry back in the game. |

| Original Gangsta | so... debt + debt = Profit? I don't see how one mismanaged company buying another is going to solve any of their problems. |

| All I see is a black hole, and sooner or later they’re going to suck each one of us into it. But when they come for me, I'm going to take as many of them with me as I can. | |

| Globe Trekker | You'll see all sorts of mergers and buy outs in the coming months. The less-weak companies will get bargains on their dieing competitors. And Chrysler certainly had it coming. |

| Tweak Minion | I don't get it. They're both crappy. GM loses a billion dollars a month and they want to buy out Chrysler? I hope the gov. disallows this. Both companies are way beyond their capabilities of handling so many different brands. |

| Tweak Minion | I don't get WHY but whatever keeps them in the marketplace. Even though I hate them and their shit vehicles, they're necessary. What will fat white women drive if there's no Sunfires around for generations to come? |

| Dont mess with old school | Chrysler is really doing that bad? Of all the new cars I see on the road a majority seem to be Chrysler's. To me it looked like they were on the right track. |

| Tweak Minion | I agree, I thought Chrysler was doing great too; the amount of Chargers and 300s and RAMs I see on the road is staggering. I think the problem is that they're losing on every car because they sell them so dirt cheap. The Chrysler 300 starts at $26,000 which seems a bargain for a supposedly high class 'executive' car; a comparable Lexus or Acura would easily be $36,000+. Even a BASIC Accord is only $5000 less. But all the stuff they try to pack in there and all the image they try to build with it costs money; but in order to keep it in a price someone will buy it for they have to cut corners on quality but still end up taking a loss on it. I guess the money they make from after-purchase isn't covering it? Scary to see giants like that collapsing |

| Jolly Roger | did you take business math to!?! its a bad scene out there, both companies are doing very badly, ford aswell. Its not a stretch to say that we could actaully potentially see then end of American automotive manufacturing with things as they are. the big 3 stocks are worth what, 20% of what they where not more then a few years ago. thats a HUUUUUUUUUGE drop. that said I don't think that will actaully happen, the big three, weather I agree with keeping them in business or not employee alot of people and contribute a great deal to the economy in both the states and in Canada. More then anything I think this move is an attempt to shore up there position in the world, the bigger they are, the less the Gov. can afford to let them fail. its the AIG syndrome. They're trying to put themselves into a position where the Gov. has no choice but to keep them afloat as things gets inevitably worse for both of them. |

| Globe Trekker | Ha! So funny. But yeah, Honda doesn't offer such a warranty. Because they didn't have such a notorious reliability record on their drive trains, that required the lifetime thing in order to lure back customers. Hyundai did the same thing. The formula goes as follows: Shitty Car + Lifetime Warranty = "Well, it's a piece of shit but look at the warranty!". And so you buy a shitty car against all rational thought. I'd rather pay a little more and get a quality vehicle from the get-go, save me the hassle at the dealer. |

| Tweak Minion | I really want the 300 or the Charger but alas I won't get them. I've seen too many issues with them. I guess there's a huge transmission problem with them. |

| Tweak Minion | this surprises me. I don't see how debt + debt = profit either. I'm surprised Chrysler is doing so badly. Like others have said, i've seen tons of newer Chryslers and Dodge's the past couple of years. The nice and new body styles have really impressed a lot of people. Maybe it's just too much, too late? Like others have said, maybe they are just taking a big loss on each car. i'm not sure if this is going to be a good thing or not. less competition is not a good thing, that's for sure. it will be interesting to see what happens. Curious what will happen with Ford as well. Isn't Ford doing a little better than GM though? |
