| infinite resolution | So I'm finally going to get my car stereo installed next weeked. Just called and made an appointment I have a Boston Acoustic G212-4 subwoofer (G2 series, 12" single 4ohm vc) and want a custom box for it. The standard prebuilt boxes all seem to be rear firing, then there is the design in the sub documentation, which is just sort of a box firing upward. I talked to some people at car audio shops, and one or two mentioned a down firing sub box. That is an idea I like a lot, because not only does it hide what the woofer is (even though it will be covered by my cargo cover most of the time) it will protect it from getting hit with stuff when I am taking things in and out, plus the woofer will never be in the sun either. One of the guys said it was kind of a 'fad' that has yet to prove its self better than other designs, but it it sounds AS GOOD as any other design, I think the other advantages (mostly protecting the woofer from accidental damage) is worth it. With home stereo, down firing woofers are very common, but so are front firing. Any thoughts? |

| Senior Member | are you talking down firing at an angle or true straight down firing woofers? I can understand angled but if its straight down i'd have to be taken aback. I dont see how the sound wouldnt end up muffled but even if it didnt I would imagine the box would rattle after a few good sessions. I can see how it would work but to setup a decent sound stage you usually need them firing in an area that the sound can bounce off of. To me the only reason you'd fire them down would be to make a ghetto cruzer, one where the body panels rattle and not the driver :P |

| Jolly Roger | I've never seen or more importantly hurt a setup like that before, but I agree with your reasoning behind wanting it. If they sound as good as any other setup I’d be very interested, let me know if what else you find out. I’ll be shopping for a setup for myself soon, it will be in a hatchback and I’m pretty worried about the subs getting stolen, it would be nice if they weren’t visible. |
