Are these things universal?
Would I need an adapter kit on a 96 Grand Am?
How hard are they to install? Could I do it myself?

Also, if someone could point me in the direction of a cheap and reliable deck and head unit, I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Chris

Check Crutchfield, they have all the adapters you need to install. They are overpriced, but it will give you a good idea of what you need. Installing them is a piece of cake.

Most use some type of adapter to fit your stock harness. Crutchfield will give all the tools and instructions to get it install easily. Usually they're more expensive but the Kenwood I just bought was no cheaper elsewhere...and I got the tools/adapters/instructions.

The best thing to do is find all the wires(12v, grnd, spks, remote, etc) and cut the old harness out and crimp in the new one. If you're any good at it you'll have it done in 10 minutes. The next thing is, you may need a kit($15 at wal-mart) to cover dead space in your console(if your stock one was a biggy).

If you already have an aftermarket unit, and are going to another unit of the same brand, it's easy as hell( *<5 minute install).

you want to get the aftermarket adaptor for your car. don't butcher your factory harness. Do things right. Plus unless you have a car with a long factory harness, its going to take longer to do it the wrong way

Do not do this, ever. This is the worst advice you could take when installing an aftermarket unit. It will cause you nothing but problems and headache if you ever want to replace the unit again, or when you sell the car. Do it the right way as suggested and get an adaptor for your factory harness. Never just cut it off.

Eh, it's worked fine for my last couple vehicles. Though "cut out" may have not been the correct term. How about "splice in the new one"? I may have left it in there and just used the crimp on splice connectors.
