bluetooth car stereos

so i've seen some head units that have built in bluetooth. can those play mp3's stored on a mobile phone?

I am speaking from limited experience, but the few I have seen with bluetooth are so you can wire up a mic and use your car like a giant speakerphone.

And most are advertised as "Bluetooth READY", meaning you'll still have to buy the adapter kit for Bluetooth functionality.
