the jeep cherokee thread reminded me to ask this...

im trying to help my dad figure out whats wrong with this jeep, i really dont wanna spend alot of effort and money on this because its really not my problem and hes had too many chances to get it fixed...

but its a 93 cherokee, very base model, manual, and whatever that small ass engine is in there.. looks like a 4cyl.

well, it cant keep an idle and wants to die when driving.. and the engine has progressively gotten louder to the point where its almost unbearable like its a diesel engine for a compressor.. any ideas on specific areas to look at?? or is it toast?

Fuel filter comes to mind. Also, if it's getting louder, check the headers. They may be damaged/missing.

"Louder" is pretty vague.. what kind of noises is it making?

vacuum leak maybe?

like a loud tattering sound.. its a constant sound that speeds up in higher revs.
