is this all I need to do to get it to work? Just a harddrive and the software? What does a mod chip do, not require a cd to load up games?

Jamsan has one, you should talk to him.

All I see is a black hole, and sooner or later they’re going to suck each one of us into it. But when they come for me, I'm going to take as many of them with me as I can.

I have it. In all honestly, if you have a fat PS2, you'd be way better off getting one of those flip top cases and burning your own games (doing the swap trick). Nothing after God of War is supported by HDLoader anymore :\

Well, regardless it's about the same price but gives you more options game wise. You can play imports, too.

HD Loader is cool. I put San Andreas and a few other older games on it and it's really nice having quicker load times. Plus I can borrow games I never played and just rip them and give them back the next day. The HDLoader website has a forum and a few people mentioned that you can put the HD in your computer and rip dual layer games onto it and then put it back into the PS2. You just can't rip them from the PS2. I haven't tried it yet tho because I don't have any recent games aside from GT4.

I have a ps2 hd, and i love it -- just about every game ive ever tried works with eithe HD loader, or Toxic loader... the comment about any games not being supported after god of war is false. I've played atleast 20 different games off my HD since god of war... Tons of sports games, and a few other genres. I mostly download ISO's off the net, and throw my PS2 drive into my PC, and copy the games to it. You can also rent/borrow games from friends, and rip the disc directly from the ps2 drive. You can also rip dual layer games from your PC like namelessentity mentioned. If you can get a good deal on a harddrive and network adapter (or already have both laying around), this mod costs next to nothing, requires alot less work then a flip top case, and the loading times are EXTREMELY fast.

The only downside is that you cannot play any games online (except really older ones). You'll need the original disc for that.

Thanks Jamsam and nameless.

So is the guide above enough? I d/led Hd Loader but I don't know if it will work..

Basically, I keep this hddloader in my ps2 drive so it boots up the game load screen where I select games then right?

What harddrives are you guys using?

I skimmed through the guide quickly, and that just looks like how to phsyically install the HD into the ps2, but that looks correct. that's the really simple part..

as far as hd loader, do you have the CD of it? If so, you just boot the hd loader up, and then itll take you to the menu where all your games are. from there you can play, delete, rename, and install games... If you have a burned copy of the hd loader, that won't worry (same reason why you can't play burned games without a mod chip). I have various exploits on my memory card including hdloader, toxic loader (same as hd loader, but compatible with more games), and a few other things (ftp into the ps2, trasnfer games to it from pc, etc.). If you want, you can send me your memory card, and I can transfer the exploits onto it, and ship it back to you. All you'll need is a PS1 disc, and when that ps1 disc loads, the exploits on the memory card trigger, and instead of going to the ps1 game, you'll get taken to a menu where u can load hdloader, toxic loader, ftp, etc.

As far as harddrives, here is a good site with lists of compatibile/incompatible drives. I personally have the Maxtor L01P200 200gb 7200 rpm drive. Dispite what your previous link says about the max limit being 125gb, thats false (atleast with the newer version of HDLoader). The limit is higher, but im not sure what it is (but I know i can use my complete 200gb).

This looks interesting, but... what's the difference between buying the original kit (assuming you can still find it) and doing it yourself? I mean, if I have a spare HDD (which happens to be compatible, according to that list) laying around, can I just go to Wal-Mart to buy the network adapter, connect the HDD to it, stick the thing in the PS2, and presto?! Does the HDD in the original kit come preformatted?
Sorry for asking so many questions, but this sounds really good....

Yes, you can do just that ivanolo. Any HDD (thats compatible), attach it to the network adapter, throw it in the ps2 and you're all set. HD Loader will format the drive for you. The original kit works as well, but I believe you have to format the drive as well (not sure on this one). You won't be able to save games onto the HD though.

Too bad it only loads DVD-5 PS2 games! Can't they keep developing it to support PS games and DVD-9?!
The adapter (or is it adaptor?) sells for $20 at Wal-Mart, and I have a Maxtor D540X-4K (40GB, ATA100, 5400RPM, 2MB Cache) that's listed as compatible. The only thing that might pose a problem is the fact that my PS2 isn't modchipped.

I have a Western Digital 80gb HDD. I actually bought a 300gb SATA drive as an upgrade and bought HD Loader on a whim because I felt like the 80gb drive would just be sitting in my PC otherwise. I did have to take off some cover on the network adapter to make the drive connect, but aside from that everything was really simple.

You don't need a modchipped ps2. Mine isn't. As far as having to modify your network adapter, some harddrive might not fit properly, thus causing the need to do that. If on the site, it lists a certain drive as working and fitting (without comments saying they needed to do XXX to get it to fit), then it'll mostly likely work without a hitch.

Wait, though. I read that original HD Loader CDs are not being made anymore. Is this true?

just have jamsam make a exploit on your memory card, all you need is a psx game and your set.

NEW, NTSC VERSION 3!! SUPPORTS DVD-9 DUAL LAYER DISCS!!

Utilizing exciting new technology, HDAdvance Version 3 improves on the popular HDLoader and allows you to install and run your Playstation 2™ original and backup games directly from a hard disk drive connected to your console (Sony PS2 Network adapter™ and compatible hard disk drive required.)

The Playstation 2™ is capable of reading data from a hard disk drive much faster than it can read from a CD or DVD. Using HDAdvance to run your games from a hard disk drive leads to significantly reduced game loading times. Never again will you need to endure painfully slow loading times which plague so many games!

HDAdvance, the succsssor to the popular HDLoader, makes gaming more convenient by allowing you to store your games (original and backup) on a hard disk drive, eliminating the need to change discs each time you wish to play a different game

HDAdvance’s user interface is designed with simplicity in mind – boot up HDAdvance and begin playing your games without wasting any time navigating through a complex user interface.

The intuitive user interface allows easy management of games currently installed on your hard disk drive. Add or remove games with the push of a button.

Comes with a Slide Card Tool for backups
There is no way around the 120GB limit is there?

Maybe I should look into a 500GB hard drive and use my 120's for this...
