Ultima PC: Issue 1 (Page 13/14) Posted: July 29, 2000
Written by: Tuan "Solace" Nguyen Investment Protection We’ve just put together one insane machine. And it’s definitely the ultimate PC for now. Sure, you can add more components, but you’ll likely just be wasting space. Every component in this system has a definite purpose. There are no devices stuck in here just to fill up space.

Everything is done. And there is just a few small touches left to make the perfect setup. First of all, you have to protect your insane investment by making sure it can last for as long as possible. First, avoid putting other stuff inside the room. Maybe you can have a cabinet to store some books and other computer stuff but try to keep room accessories to a minimal. This ensures that your ultimate computer will output the best sounds possible. Sounds get modified by things in your room and can audibly change. You want the sound to stay as clean and as original as possible. With an empty room and just the computer in it, you’ll have maximum acoustic reproduction. And besides, you’ll have room for rear speak placement as well.

Above is a natural Dolby Digital setup. You can even go further and add side-firing speakers. Have you ever tried dual subwoofers? That also rocks, literally.

Keep the room clean, tidy and do not have any pets in the room. The hairs that they shed can get clogged in your machine. The case is air filtered which is already a protection against foreign particles and debris but you don’t want hair and stuff clogging up that filters.

Lastly, you’ll want uninterruptible power. The UPS [ APC Smart-UPS 2200 $ 797.00 ]

- Output power capacity: 2,200 VA
- Output power capacity: 1,600 Watts
- Output Voltage: 100 V
- Output Connections: (8)NEMA 5-15R
- Typical backup time at half load: 32.3 minutes
- Battery type: Maintenance-free sealed Lead-Acid battery with suspended electrolyte, leak-proof
- Typical recharge time: 5 hour(s)

Surge protection, spike protection and power outage protection. You want to make sure nothing fries your computer. And you want to make sure that in the case of a power outage that you have time to save stuff and shut down properly without losing precious data.

This baby here has 8 power outlets for all your needs and can power practically this entire system for a good 20 minutes. That’s more than enough time to tell everyone that your power is out and you have to shutdown.

The UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is a must have for this type of system. These components are top notch and you don’t want anything to happen to them. Even for a more down to earth system, you wouldn’t want anything to smoke your investment. So I recommend a good UPS for any system you care about. APC (American Power Conversion) makes some of the best UPS devices. Next Page
